DIY Giant Balloon Messages

By Kelly on May 14, 2013

It’s graduation season and, in my world, it’s birthday season too, so I have a dual-purpose DIY for you today! Giant balloon messages!! (I told you my theme of the year was giant!) I wanted to create something that would make a big statement and since it has come to my attention that you folks love balloons they were the perfect thing to make it happen! To celebrate the Class of 2013, I used giant numbers and to ring in any other special occassion, I wrote a little message. Both were easily strung on the balloon and make great decor and gifts for just about any reason to celebrate!

DIY Balloon Message Supplies

Poster Board
Scissors
Ruler
Tape
Balloons! (I used a 36″ round balloon)

Cut out your numbers or letters from your poster board (mine are about 15″ tall each). You can print off numbers/letters in a font you like to use as templates or just freehand it. I used a ruler to make sure all my numbers were equal width since I didn’t use a template. Tape your numbers/letters to the string of the balloon and that is it!!! I added some skinny strips of streamers (cut in half) to jazz them up. These will not weigh the balloons down so I just secured it to the ground by taping it securely. You could also tie them to a table or chair.

These make great party “WOWs” and the perfect alternative to the typical balloon bouquet that signifies the party house!

DIY Flamingo Piñata

By Kelly on May 13, 2013

Happy Monday guys! I’m coming at you from DC today, I’m just all over the place! Last week I left you in Florida and now I’ve begun to work my way up the East Coast. We were in Florida because Jeff’s sister Jen was graduating from the University of Miami.  We had such a fun weekend and, of course, I couldn’t go without a little bit of celebratory crafting. As a fun way to present her real graduation gift, I decided to make her a piñata and hide the gift inside. Somehow, a flamingo seemed like the perfect fit! This tutorial isn’t complete or detailed, since I made it on the go, but my past piñata tutorials can help ya out there. Isn’t he just SO fun!?!?

DIY Flamingo Piñata  How To Make a Flamingo Pinata

Cardboard (I used a tri-fold display board)
Pink, white and black crepe paper (I actually used black tissue because I couldn’t find black crepe in FL!)
Strong Tape
Craft Glue
Scissors
String

Start by cutting out your cardboard shapes. You’ll need two flamingo shapes (I just freehanded them while looking at a flamingo pic online!), a few long pieces of 3″ wide cardboard (for the sides) and two skinny pieces for the legs. Then cut a bunch of strips of 1″ wide fringe.

Flamingo Pinata DIY

Tape together your piñata. Start by taping the sides (bending the cardboard as you go) to one of your flamingo shapes, then repeat with the other side. I left a flap in the back for adding in the gift and then just tucked it under to close!

Once you have his body completed, cover the whole thing in fringe. Start with the front and back, and start at the bottom working your way up. When you get to the beak, add a few layers of white fringe and then a few layers of black to finish it off. Then repeat this with the sides. Finally, wrap the skinny cardboard legs in fringe and glue them to the bottom of the body. Add an eyeball (his is black tissue paper!) and poke a hole in the top to add a string for hanging.

This piñata was made just like the giant heart piñata, except I used tape instead of hot glue for putting it together. For more detailed instructions, head there.

For the Love of Roses DIY Workshop

By Kelly on May 9, 2013

As many of you know by now, I had the pleasure of hosting a DIY crepe paper rose workshop at Jurlique in Santa Monica last week, in partnership with Martha Stewart Living!  Jurlique recently launched a (wonderful!) rose-scented collection, so they invited several ladies in to sample the new products, and craft giant paper roses to go right along with it! We even spritzed a few of the roses with Jurlique’s mist. Perfect!! I was busy instructing, and really just gushing over everybody’s awesome creations, but here are a few snapshots from the evening!

Five Ways to Serve Breakfast in Bed

By Kelly on May 8, 2013

Yesterday I shared the sweetest little free printables for serving an extra special breakfast in bed to mom this Mother’s Day, and today I wanted to give you few ideas for DIY-ing up something to go with that coveted meal! I think all of these would pair perfectly with those printables, and put a smile on mom’s face right from the start! Here’s five handmade ways to serve breakfast in bed!

1. On a fancy tray: I’ve been obsessed with this DIY tray since I first saw it! Turn the meal into the gift itself and make one of these to present all the breakfast goodies on!

2. DIY Printed Tea Towels: No paper napkins here! Have the kids craft a pretty set of tea towels to keep those crumbs wrangled. Yes, they really are easy enough for kiddos to do!

3. DIY Paper Poppies: So you all know how to make giant roses now, but if you want a paper flower option for wrapping in this special paper, here’s a great one! Paper poppies! A bouquet of these is just as wonderful as a bouquet of the fresh ones, and these will last longer, too!

4. DIY Sleep Mask: You know what, maybe mom will want to go back to sleep after her pancakes, and that’s A-OK! Craft her one of these quirky cute masks to help her get her beauty rest!

5. DIY Confetti Mugs: Coffee looks better in confetti, doesn’t it!? Give plain white mugs a modern makeover before fillin’ up with the good stuff!

Ok, now I really want someone to serve me breakfast in bed! I’m a mom to a dog… that counts, right!?
