DIY Glitter Letter Magnets

By Kelly on Nov 29, 2012

The glitter fairy came again. This time she came bearing a fun sparkly holiday gift for kiddos! You know those plastic letter magnets that almost every family has? They just got glitter-fied! I actually made these for my niece’s birthday this year but wouldn’t they make the best advent calendar surprise!? Whatever you use them for, there’s nothing wrong with a little extra sparkle this time of year. Happy glitzing!

DIY Glitter Letter Magnets

How to Make Glitter Letter Magnets

Supply List:

Plastic Letter Magnets
Mod Podge
Paint Brush
Glitter
Can (Optional)

I used a (magnetic) old soup can to hold my letters while I worked with them. While the hold wasn’t super strong, I found it easier than just laying them on a piece of wax paper.

Magnet Gifts for Kids

Cover letters in a (more even the my) coat of Mod Podge. Cover with glitter and carefully tap the can to get excess off. Let dry completely! Important!

DIY Letter Magnets Letter Magnet DIY

Try to keep all glitter contained. (Fail!)

Glitter

Once dry, touch up any spots where you can see the original letter color through it. Ideally, try to match your glitter closely to your magnet color (i.e. any shade of blue glitter with the blue magnets) so even if it does peek through, you’re good! Either way, you’ll probably have to do some touch up with mod podge and glitter on the edges. Let the touch ups dry then cover the entire letter in another coat of mod podge to seal the glitter. Let dry completely.

Package up as a Christmas gift (Packaging ideas to match coming next week!), stick them in an advent calendar slot or just put them on the fridge for some sparkly fun!

Please make sure you take the extra step to seal your glitter for these. We don’t need the kids ingesting glitter now, do we!?

Five Ways to Make a Menorah

By Kelly on Nov 28, 2012

Holy moly, I can’t believe Hanukkah starts next week! While I don’t celebrate the holiday, part of Jeff’s family does, so today’s five things is dedicated to the menorah! I actually really wanted to craft a menorah this year but time got the best of me. Instead I’m sharing five menorahs, and projects I think could be adapted for one, that a few others dreamed up! You’ll have to put on your thinking cap for a few of these, and take a step away from tradition, but you can do it!!

1. DIY Plastic Animal Menorah: If you can find an item that a plastic animal hasn’t been turned in to, you should win a prize! I happen to love these giant glittered animals turned menorahs. Yes, it’s quite non-traditional, but oh so fun!

2. DIY Geometric Menorah: These are actually place card holders but ever since I saw them I thought about how cool they’d look adapted as geometric candle holders. Throw a bunch together and wam! A menorah!

3. DIY Wooden Block Menorah: I talked all about things to do with wooden blocks here, but did ya know they’d also make a great menorah!? Perfect for stacking, color-blocking and making you’re own. Gotta love a versatile option!

4. DIY Ombre Dipped Candles: These are birthday candles but supersize them and stick them in pretty sprayed candle holders for a seriously stunning menorah. Ombre never looked so good!

5. DIY Glitter Vase Menorah: Another idea I’m asking you to get creative for! These glitter vases are perfect for my glitter-filled mood currently and I bet you could easily swap flowers for candles (Just make sure they’re far enough away from the edges) for a sparkly option.

DIY Glitter Holiday Party Hats

By Kelly on Nov 27, 2012

I’m knee deep in glitter over here, ladies and gentleman! Since I don’t gravitate towards glitter throughout the rest of the year, when Christmas rolls around, I make up for it. Big time. Here’s the first of a few glitter-fied projects, DIY glitter party hats for the holidays! With tinsel too! Oooh… sparkly! I was lucky enough to receive a big ol’ box of Mod Podge products to try and since it’s the only item that can hold it’s own against glitter, I got my glitz on. These hats are easy peasy and the glitter stays right where it should! Now about all that glitter you accidentally dumped on the floor. Well, I can’t help with that.

DIY Holiday Party Hats

Supply List:

Paper Mache Cone (Purchased at a local craft store)
Mod Podge (In the finish of your choice! There are so many options. Decisions, decisions!)
Paint brush
Glitter (I prefer very fine glitter, such as Martha Stewart’s)
Tinsel Garland
Headband (Or ribbon/elastic if you prefer)
Hot Glue Gun

To Make:

Cover your paper mache cone with an even coating of Mod Podge. Work quickly, you don’t want any of it to dry.

Immediately cover in glitter. As you can see my glitter method is very scientific, consisting of dumping almost the entire container of glitter on my hat. Shake off excess. Be sure to put down a piece of wax paper before you do this so you can easily funnel your leftover glitter back into it’s jar. Let dry completely.

Mod Podge Glitter Party Hat DIY DIY Glittery Party Hats

Once dry, it’s time to seal your glitter so you aren’t covered in it every time you wear the hat! Paint another layer of Mod Podge right over your glitter. Let dry completely. It will turn clear, promise!

Glittery Party Hats for the Holidays Glitter Party Hats for Christmas

NOTE! If you aren’t using a headband, see below before doing this step. Cut a piece of tinsel the same length as the circumference of your hat.Carefully use hot glue to attach it to the bottom of your hat. Then cut a small piece of tinsel and hot glue it to the top of your hat.

Party Hat DIY Project Tinsel Topped Party Hats

If you’re using a headband, you can get fancy or keep it simple. I kept it simple. (Remember, I happily cheat during the holidays!) I just glued it with two dots of hot glue onto the edge of the hat. Hold in place until it sets. If you want to cover up the inside you can glue a circle of cardstock to the bottom of the hat, then sandwich the headband between that and another circle of cardstock. If you’re forgoing the headband all together, use an awl to poke two holes in your hat and slip a ribbon or elastic through. Secure with a knot and then cover with tinsel as outlined above.

Man I love the holidays. Long live glitter! Not that I have a choice, since my apartment is now covered in it. Forever.

Of course, there’s a whole lot more you can do with Mod Podge besides cover things in glitter. For more, check out Plaid’s Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest!
