DIY Mini Easter Party Hats

By Kelly on Mar 22, 2013

Back while I was deep in the trenches of St. Patrick’s Day crafting, I snuck in a little Easter on you! I was so happy to meet the wonderful ladies behind Shop Sweet Lulu at Alt Summit this year and they asked me to join their new design team! That means about once a month I’ll be stopping by the Shop Sweet Lulu blog to get crafty with some of their amazing party supplies. Seriously, does life get better!? First up, I turned candy cups into itty bitty Easter hats, so you can stand out among all those big fancy bonnets! Want to make one to match your Easter dress? Head here for the whole tutorial!

DIY Easter Bunny Piñata

By Kelly on Mar 21, 2013

We’ve gotten our egg decorating on (twice!) and there is still one more to come. But first, we piñata. I’m definitely petitioning to make piñata a verb, by the way. While I work on that, take a look at the easiest piñata I’ve ever made! No cardboard cutting, no fringing. Just some crepe paper gathered up and BAM! It turns into an Easter bunny. This Easter piñata is pull-style. Fill it up, hang it up, pull, enjoy.

DIY Easter Bunny Pinata

Bunny Pinata DIY

White Fine Crepe Paper (This is what I used. It’s the thickness of crepe streamers, and you can purchase it at many party stores. You could probably make tissue paper work as well.)
Pink and White Cardstock
Pink Pom Pom
Ribbon
Glue
Tape
Scissors
Awl (Optional, you can use scissors too!)
Piñata Fillings! (I love using Easter grass and even mini Easter eggs in these!)

First, cut a 4.5″ (About! Just find a bowl to trace.) circle out of white cardstock. For each piñata you’ll also need two 20″ by 20″ squares of crepe paper. Lay those down one atop the other and then lay your circle on top, right in the center. Using an awl or sharp scissor point, poke a hole through all three layers.

Easy DIY Pinata How To Make a Pinata

Cut your ribbons to your desired length (These will be used to pull the piñata apart, so make sure they are long enough for the piñata-puller to reach once it’s hung up!) and slip them through the hole. Tie a large knot and then tape the end to your circle for extra security.

Now pile those piñata filling goodness atop your crepe + circle. Now you’ll want to bring both sides up, as if you are folding the paper in half horizontally.

Pinch together both ends to form “ears” and tie them together with a piece of ribbon, knotting in the back. Leave a lot of extra length at the end of your ribbon because this is how you’ll hang the piñata.

Now to fanci-fy those ears! Cut out two “ear” shapes from your pink cardstock, slightly smaller than the ears you just formed with the crepe paper. Glue one onto each ear.

Finally, add that cute little pink nose, and any other embellishments you may want. I happened to think it was too darn cute with just the nose, so I left it at that! Guess what? You’re done!

Easiest piñata ever, no? Now just hang, and pull!

No real Easter bunnies were harmed in the making of this piñata.

DIY Sprinkle Easter Eggs

By Kelly on Mar 20, 2013

I was perusing the seasonal section of Target as I far too often do, and came across the prettiest Easter nonpareil sprinkles. Obviously, I bought them. And then I proceeded to cover eggs in them. Because isn’t that the logical thing to do!? Sprinkles are the new glitter, after all! These sprinkle Easter eggs are quite delicate but man are they pretty! Now make your own. You know you want to.

How To Cover Eggs in Sprinkles

Pastel Nonpareils (I found these at Target!)
Eggs, Hard-Boiled (Update: If you are concerned about wasting eggs, you can use this same concept on styrofoam eggs or other faux eggs you can find at a craft store!)
Tacky Glue
Paintbrush
Spoon

First you need to get everything set up. Pour your sprinkles into a medium size bowl. Squeeze some tacky glue out of the bottle onto freezer paper or wax paper. Using your paintbrush, cover your egg in a good, even layer of the glue. Now dip your egg in the sprinkles and press down firmly, covering about half your egg in sprinkles.

Let go of your egg in the bowl, and using a spoon, cover the other half of the egg with the sprinkles. Now for the most important part! After your egg is fully covered in sprinkles, firmly press the arc of the spoon against and around your egg, “sealing” the sprinkles on. If you don’t do this step, your sprinkles will fall off very easily. So do it!

Sprinkle Easter Egg Tutorial Sprinkle Easter Egg

Let your egg dry partially right there in the bowl of sprinkles (You can use a large bowl so you can do multiple at once). Once the sprinkles are mostly set, if you want, you can carefully lift it out and allow it to dry completely on a wire rack.

A little note.. These eggs are delicate and meant for decoration only. Make sure you do the spoon “sealing” step to secure the sprinkles and try not to toss these around. Please do not eat them! Obviously the glue renders the sprinkles inedible, and be sure to throw away your excess sprinkles since they will have come in contact with the glue as well.

DIY Tassel Ice Cream Spoons

By Kelly on Mar 19, 2013

I get far too excited when a DIY project involves fringe! When Brooke of Sucre Shop reached out to me and asked if I was interesting in creating a tutorial for a new product, tassel ice cream spoons, I obviously said yes! I love Sucre Shop’s colorful cutlery, and adding some fringey tassels? Well I don’t mind if I do! The best part is that they sell pre-drilled spoons now, so all you have to do is fringe up some tissue and attach! Can these be any more festive!? I mean, really? Let’s require all future utensils to be tasseled. You in?

It’s a color frenzy up in here!

DIY Tasseled Ice Cream Spoons Tutorial

Tassel Spoon Supplies

Drilled Ice Cream Spoons from Sucre Shop
Tissue Paper
Baker’s Twine
Jump Rings (Two per spoon)
Rotary Cutter or Scissors
Cutting Board

For each tassel, you’ll need a piece of tissue paper that is 9″ long by 4.5″ wide. Cut your tissue paper to size, then fold in half lengthwise. Lay your folded tissue on top of your cutting board and, using the lines on the board as a guideline (if possible), cut 1/4″ wide fringe strips all the way down the length of the folded tissue (leaving the folded edge uncut).

Unfold your fringed tissue and starting at one end, tightly roll it up.

DIY Mini Tassels How To Make Mini Tassels

Now fold this in half so all the fringe comes together and you have the beginnings of a loop at the top. If you think your tassel is too wide to fit the jump ring, you can fold the center in half again to narrow it. Open a jump ring (with your fingers, or jewelry pliers) and slip it through the loop you’ve formed. Close the jump ring. Now take a piece of baker’s twine and wrap it tightly around the top of your tassel, just under the jump ring. Tie in a small knot and trim excess twine off.

Tassel Ice Cream Spoons DIY Mini Tassels for Spoons

To attach your tassel to your spoon, slip a second jump ring through the drilled hole on each spoon. Then connect the two jump rings and voila! Tasseled ice cream spoons!

Time to par-tay! And if you can’t get enough of these mini tassels, make a mini tassel garland to match! (psst.. that tassel tutorial is slightly different. Both are equally easy, just depends on your preference!)

*This post was done in partnership with Sucre Shop. I was provided with product to create this project. All opinions are that of my own.

DIY Sequin Easter Eggs

By Kelly on Mar 18, 2013

As promised earlier, my first Easter DIY of the season is ready and waiting for you! And boy, is it sparkly! I’ve had a thing for gold sequins lately (read: always), so why not decorate Easter eggs with them!? Not your traditional egg, but definitely one for the non-traditional Easter-er (that’s a word, yes?). Spell a word, make some hearts for the love of your life or just cover the whole darn egg in sequins! Let’s do this.

DIY Sequin Heart Easter Eggs

Sequin Easter Egg Supplies

Jumbo Eggs, Hard-Boiled
Sequin Trim
Hot Glue Gun
Pencil

Lightly draw the letter, heart or other shape you want on your egg with a pencil. Working in small sections, go over your pencil line with hot glue and quickly press your sequin trim on top.

DIY Sequin Letter Easter Eggs Sequin Letter Easter Eggs

Keep going until your entire letter or shape is formed. Trim any excess thread or sequins off and if for any reason you need to touch up your letter, carefully glue on individual sequins (you can just pull these off the strand of trim).
