DIY Fringey Pots of Gold

By Kelly on Mar 13, 2013

You saw a sneaky peek of these guys with the leprechaun notes, but here they are in all their glory! Fringey pots of gold! Ok so I suppose these pots are gold, not filled with gold, but as long as there’s gold and rainbows involved, I’m happy. These itty bitty St. Patrick’s Day treat pouches can be stuffed with candy or other small items and they are pret-tay easy to make! I think they’d be great, sans clovers, for all sorts of parties too!

Fringe Pots of Gold Supplies

Gold Mylar (Cut into 10″ squares), You will need two squares per “pot of gold”
Colorful Baker’s Twine
Paper Shamrocks (Made with cardstock and a paper punch), optional
Candy or Other Treats
Rotary Cutter
Cutting Board

The cutting board is your best friend for this project. Lay two squares of gold mylar (one on top of the other) on your cutting board, lining up with the lines of the board. Begin by cutting a two inch square out of each corner of your mylar (you can cut through both layers at once).

One side at a time, fringe the edges of your mylar (again, through both layers and two inches deep) with the rotary cutter. Lay your candy or other treats in the center of your mylar…

…and gather up the edges to form a pouch. Tie with twine.

To finish, I added some colorful shamrocks to mine with a glue dot.

Rainbow Cannoli

By Kelly on Mar 12, 2013

I say “holy cannoli” a lot but today I’m actually serious. Holy. Rainbow. Cannoli. You see, I came up with this crazy idea that it would be fun color-ize cannoli for St. Patrick’s Day. I like to think of it as blending my Irish and Italian cultures into one. You with me? But here’s a confession… I have never deep fried anything before! I know. Weird. So I called on my favorite foodie ladies over at Garlic My Soul and luckily they were up for the challenge! So one fine Sunday we got together, and made rainbow cannoli. Well, they made cannoli while I sorted sprinkle colors and sampled extras.

Rainbow Cannoli

You can head over to Garlic My Soul for more on how to make these colorful treats, but I’ll give you the short of it. Whip up a batch of your favorite cannoli dough, divide into six equal portions and color each with food coloring to make your rainbow colors. Then proceed as you normally would to roll out and fry your shells!

Rainbow Colored Cannoli

To give them a little more pizzazz we added these colored candy coated chips to the ends, but I think regular sprinkles would work just as well!

And if you want to match your dessert, you should probably make this rainbow fascinator too!

Free Printable Leprechaun Notes

By Kelly on Mar 11, 2013

I have literally been talking about how much I love these printables all weekend. A few weeks back I had the idea to make itty bitty notes to leave around the house from the mysterious little leprechauns that sneak around on St. Patrick’s Day! I knew I wanted to partner with someone awesome on these notes and after meeting Kate from Striped Cat Studio at Alt Summit and falling head over heels for her hand lettering and watercolor, I recruited her and she rocked it OUT! The idea is to leave these free printable notes (Download them HERE!) around the house with little treats and a magnifying glass for easy reading (or really, because it’s just more fun that way!) on St. Patty’s Day. The kids (and adults, right?!) will have a total blast trying to spot the notes throughout the day!

You can pick up plastic magnifying glasses at your local party store (in the favor aisle) or on Amazon (work that Prime shipping!) here. You can read the notes without the help, but you know you want to get them anyway! Now keep reading for a few ideas on the treats and trinkets to pair them with!

DIY Lucky Poppers

By Kelly on Mar 7, 2013

It’s high time for another confetti popper DIY up in here! Except, these aren’t just any confetti poppers, they’re lucky ones! How do I know? Well, I said so. And, they’re chock full of lucky clovers and little bits of gold. Does life get any better!? Instead of pinching someone on St. Patrick’s Day because they’re not wearing green, you should probably just crack one of these over top their head for a hefty dose of good Irish luck!

DIY St Patrick's Day Lucky Poppers

I totally didn’t know what was about to happen…

DIY Lucky Poppers

Can’t you tell!?

DIY Confetti Poppers

Toilet Paper Tubes
Tissue Paper or Lightweight Crepe Paper (I used this polka dot crepe paper! Don’t use heavy crepe for this, it won’t tear easily when “popping” and then you’ll just be a creep standing over someone with a paper-covered tube.)
Confetti (See how to make some below!)
Four Leaf Clovers (Pre-made from a craft store or made using a paper punch, just like these!)
Twine and/or Sequin Trim or Ribbon
Double Stick Tape
Scissors

If you don’t buy pre-made confetti, you can make some using the technique I used for the surprise jars. Buy a fringe curtain and snip snip snip! Insta-confetti! Then mix in your four leaf clovers for good luck.

DIY St Patricks Day Confetti St Patricks Day Confetti

Cut your toilet paper tube in half (this will help the popper “pop” easily). Cut a piece of crepe or tissue paper so it covers your entire tube when rolled and is about 10″ long. Place a piece of double stick tape on each half of your tube. Put them right next to eachother (as if they weren’t cut) and begin to roll the paper around it, adhering the tape.

Confetti Popper DIY DIY Confeitti Poppers

Tape up the other edge of your roll so you have a long tube. Pinch and twist one end of the excess paper, right against the tube and tie securely with twine or ribbon.

DIY St Patricks Day Confetti Poppers St Patricks Day DIY Confetti Poppers

Through the open end, fill your tube with your lucky confetti.

Then twist and tie up your other end. I added some sequin trim to cover up my twine. And just because gold sequins are awesome.

DIY St Patrick's Day Lucky Confetti Poppers

I think it would be a blast to pass these around your office or around a party and instruct the recipients that they must break one over someone’s head to give them good luck! psst… These break really easily just by holding on to the tube and twisting quickly.

Then you wait for everyone to get in on the action and….
